Genres.
Do you decide what genre you're writing in before you start writing?
I think that's going to be hard for me to decide, even harder than the plot.

So far I've covered alternate history, really lame horror, and last year was a mix of mystery/suspense/action.
As for this year, all I have up to this point is two character ideas and a city. That's it.
Usually, I start with a title. I'm great with titles. The Absence of Birds and To Say The Least are so far my favorites that I've done nothing with. Might be able to use the second one this year.

I'm really excited about this years. It's historical pseudo-steam punk fiction.
What is the next step after steampunk? Diesel punk? All I know is that it will have Mechs in it.

Honestly, the story comes to me genre included when I'm thinking of it, and most times even the form. (Some stories are just short stories not audio dramas etc.. )
I'm working on Age of Adventure Book 2. Because I'm a nerd who wants to get published and series are easier to shop for first time published writers...

I don't tend to think about a genre at all. To me it is all about the story and characters and whatever people want to lob it into afterward is fine with me.

My first one was like that with alternate history thrown in. Though, I think that's a given. It was sort of my own little guilty indulgence in the genre. I was pretty pleased with the results, too. Except parts of the plot were really, really forced.
What comes next? I'd like to see a boost to the stone punk movement. Where Steam punk borrows elements of the victorian age, stone punk take elements from... the cave man age. Yeah, I did just make that one up. Would be amusing, though.

I must point out, I can't help myself as I am a National Park Service Historical Interpreter for the period. Steam Punk is primarily Edwardian, not Victorian
We are getting more people coming through the park that are Steam Punk supporters, however, with a renewed interest in the period and more people are stopping to talk to us for extended periods of time than what most tourists will which can't be a bad thing.

I'm not going there as the last time I had a discussion like this, it took two hours. I'll meet you half way and we'll say it's both. Okay?
