So I bought one. So I'm guaranteed to win NaNo this year. Uh huh. That's how it works.

Congratulations! Hope it inspires you. I was hoping a move to somewhere with a bit more space and therefore less clutter (yeah right!) would inspire me, but it's not looking like I'll be moving now

Indeed. I'm still beg/borrow/steal when it comes to laptops. I don't write on them though.

Profit sharing cheque is supposed come out next week (Yes, the company I work for finally turned a profit this year), and by my figuring, it's almost enough for a new Dell Mini. If I can rationalize it; I mean, I already have a laptop that serves it's purpose well, is it really worth the money just for something small? I can actually argue both sides, so we'll see.

Default Lessons learned

Just thought I'd add my two cents that I learned the hard way.

1. If buying a PC laptop, either wait for the next version of Windows, or make sure you have the option to downgrade to XP. They've extended that option for 6 more months. (If you're Savvy, set up a dual-boot with Linux.)

2. Beware of Toshibas. They have this little "feature" called Flashcards that is nothing but trouble. It causes Windows to forget I have any other drives besides C. The only way to fix it is via frequent system restores.

Over the course of my day, I use four operating systems with respective hardware. If I were to order them in terms of preference (most favorite to least) it would be as follows:

Vista > XP > Mac OS X (Leopard) > Ubuntu (which is in dire need of updating and may affect it's ranking.)

Jaunty Jackelope is due out this month, I believe. I'm still researching distros to decide which is best for my needs. I'm keeping my eye out for feedback.

If you do upgrade to it, let me know what you think. I'm way back on Breezy Badger. Seriously out of date.

The college I work at is about to give out (on loan) a pile of Acer Aspire Ones to students.

I've spent the last week setting up what will be installed on them. The Linux that came with it got wiped after a glance. Running Ubuntu with UME Launcher as the interface.

I've been so taken by these that I've ordered one for myself, it dispatched today. I will be installing the same setup I'm giving to the students and I'll be using it for NaNoWriMo this year.

Bizarrely, the day after I started working with them, a namesake who is a writer for the BBC blogged that he had just bought one himself.
