Default Software.

There was talk of software to use for this in another thread, but I thought I'd break it away and make a thread specific to that topic.

So, what software are you using and how's it working for you?

There was mention made of Celtx, which I finally took a look at and started playing with. It has a Storyboard feature. Awesome!

But does anyone know how to make it give a word count, or would that mean text has to be copied elsewhere?

As it's just straight text writing (as opposed to script layout) I don't use specific software - just Open Office.

I do, however, use an Alphasmart, which is a portable keyboard with memory. It has a little screen which shows half a dozen lines of text, and you just type, turn it off when you're done and later plug it into a computer with any WP program on, press 'send' and it uploads whatever you've written.

It's not by any means necessary - I know lots of people use lots of different methods, but as I spend over 2 hours a day commuting on public transport, it's a tool I've found really, really useful - I'm not the fastest touch-typer, so anything that speeds the process is a bonus, come Nano-time, or any other time.

If you are worried about word count for Nano.

Don't.

You copy and paste your document into Nano and it will count for you. It's pretty nifty!

Default Celtx

Can you get Celtx to write in a normal 'novel' style rather than as a script? Any other suggestions for writing programs (particularly for Macs!)?

Yep.

I'm going to use the storyboard feature for planning, at least partly because it's fun and I can import photos to represent the various scenes or characters.

But it also has a regular "Text" style that you can use for novels.

And I'm on a Mac myself, and Celtx1.0 is free, and the only problem is it doesn't keep a running word count like MSWord does.

There's not much in life that I am a strong advocate of, but CeltX is one such example. I love the thing. It works great. I run it on both my work MacBook and my personal Dell. Actually... think it's on my home desktop, too.

Anyways. Great program. Prior to CeltX I toyed with Final Edit (think that's the name) which was pretty neat an' all, and very similar, but at the time it cost $100.00. I have no idea what version it's in now, but compared to what I tried at the time, Celtx is far better.

And general writing usually falls to Open Office or Notepad. Gotta love the 'pad.
