I always start on page 1, chapter 1, and write straight through until I get to "the end"

I understand that it's possible to do otherwise, and fully support anybody who can do that, but I can't imagine writing any other way.

I wish I could do that...but I'm completely A.D.D.

I was going to use D&D character sheets as an example but I could already hear eyes rolling back in their sockets.

But if it helps, (and your stuck building your supporting cast) you could pull out the ole 20 sided die and throw a little chaos into the creation of your cast.

Just for a quick example.

Say you have this character in your head. This bad dude with an attitude. Going to make life miserable for you protagonist. You roll to see what his strength is, you think it will be about high teens. (Twenty being strongest) and you roll a five.
He's puny. This could be an interesting spin on the character. He thinks he's all bad ass, but really Cindy the girl scout from down the street could kick his butt. So then you know all his bravado is really about compensating for being a weakling.

That's not a bad idea. I'm thinking it might be better used for the background and secondary characters, though. The NPCs, to continue the metaphor.

threadjack

There's a guy who does a knitting podcast, and who also enjoys role-playing games. He was talking recently about a striped sweater he made using the game dice. He'd cast one to determine which colour to start with next. He'd cast another to determine how many rows of that colour. So it sounds like those dice can really come in handy.
